Talking to people who follow my programs, i.e., people who eat nothing made of wheat or grains, restore nutrients lacking in modern life (vitamin D, magnesium, iodine, omega-3 fatty acids), and address the ubiquitous disrupted intestinal microbiome, I am impressed at the number who take no prescription medications.
They take no medications for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, acid reflux, arthritis, depression, anxiety, constipation, skin rashes, and numerous other health conditions. They tell me that, when asked what prescription drugs they take when they visit the doctor, they get a skeptical double-take when they say “none.” In short, people following a simple menu of health strategies that restore the human condition as it was supposed to be all along are relieved of many, perhaps most, of the health conditions that afflict modern people.
This wonderful situation develops because the components of the program:
- Correct insulin resistance—A diet low in fat and rich in “healthy whole grains” causes insulin resistance, the process that underlies numerous health conditions, from obesity, to hypertension, to type 2 diabetes, to Alzheimer’s dementia (“type 3 diabetes”)—yes: conventional dietary guidelines cause insulin resistance. If you were to track fasting insulin levels, you would see that high starting levels (e.g., 60 mIU/ml) drop to optimal levels (e.g., 1-4 mIU/ml), reflecting the need for less insulin, the process that allows weight loss and frees you from the risk for these common health conditions. Insulin is a fabulous weight-gain factor; reducing insulin is a fabulous weight-loss strategy, as well as relieving you of risk for the entire spectrum of insulin-driven health problems.
- Reduce inflammation—Track a measure such as C-reactive protein, IL-6, TNF-alpha, GGT, fibrinogen or other gauge of inflammation, and you would see marked reductions to ideal ranges. Along with the regression of inflammation, you can witness reductions in arthritis pain, seborrhea, and other manifestations of inflammation.
- Free you of appetite stimulation—Let’s face it: If you are exposed to appetite-stimulating factors in diet, you struggle to control impulse, appetite, temptation. Elimination of wheat, in particular, frees you of gliadin-derived opioid peptides that hugely stimulate appetite. This is why people who go wheat- and grain-free report a 3-5-day long withdrawal process characterized by headache, fatigue, nausea and depression—an opioid-withdrawal syndrome—and then feel completely freed from incessant appetite. You eat when you must, not because something is driving your appetite to eat more and more. You will never hear me advising you to cut calories, “push the plate away,” use smaller plates or the other silly unnecessary strategies advocated in conventional circles. Once you eliminate appetite-stimulating gliadin-derived opioid peptides, none of these silly strategies are necessary.
- Start the process of correcting a corrupted intestinal microbiome—The many rounds of penicillin, amoxicillin, ampicillin, doxicycline, ciprofloxacin, azithromycin, cephalexin and other antibiotics that nearly all of us have taken over the years—30 rounds typically taken by age 40–wiped out hundreds of bacterial species in your gastrointestinal microbiome. This includes important species such as Lactobacillus reuteri, Lactobacillus gasseri, Bifidobacterium infantis, and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, microbes that performed crucial functions for human health. Restoring these species therefore yields outsized human health benefits with effects that include normalization of appetite, deep sleep, increased libido, improved neurological maturation in babies, reduced blood sugar and blood pressure, improved bowel health.
This phenomenon of not needing any prescription medications is, of course, contrary to the interests of the pharmaceutical industry and all the people and industries that support them, including Big Media (broadcast and print) that no longer report on the problems in healthcare because it might clash with the interests of their advertisers. Recognize that doctors and the healthcare system are primarily interested in growing revenues, not in dispensing health. Your personal health therefore becomes YOUR responsibility.
